02/01/2008 - STRAPPED FOR CASH BRITS FACE THE BLUES ON MONDAY 28th JANUARY
• Over half (52%) of Brits worry about basic living expenses
• More than one in three (39%) admit to having less money compared to a year ago
• Two thirds (48%) agonise over increasing utility bills
Bad weather, failed new years resolutions and the long wait till pay day will have many Brits feeling blue in January, but with the most depressing day of the year looming (Monday 28th January*) misery is soon to reach its peak.
According to The Money Shop Monitor** - a quarterly barometer of the nation's cash related habits - money is causing the blues for most Brits, with a quarter (26%) losing sleep over their pay and one fifth (21%) even fearing for their job security.
However with payday in the distance the biggest worry for 52 per cent of Brits is not being able to afford their basic living costs and increasing utility bills are causing concern for nearly half (48%)
The hopes of chasing away the blues for a third (33%) of Brit's have been dashed, due to not being able to afford a summer holiday. And of those surveyed 39 per cent admit to having less money compared to a year ago, with one fifth (21%) expecting to be even worse off in three months time.

The Money Shop Monitor also revealed that when it comes to shopping in the January sales, it seems consumers are tightening their purse strings with more than one in ten (13%) cutting their spending due to high interest rates and over third (34%) putting a stop to purchasing large items such as flat screen TV's and house hold furniture.
